Red-Hot Application Takes Grilling Experience to New, Mouth-watering Heights

Even for seasoned grillmeisters (and who doesn’t claim to be one), not every steak or fish fillet turns out as planned (not to mention backyard BBQ novices). You might be distracted by your kids, or an urgent phone call gets in the way—and you lose track of time only to end up serving an undercooked filet mignon or overcooked salmon. At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Lynx Grills introduced the recipe for guaranteed culinary success: the Lynx SmartGrill. Earning the company an innovation award, the grill guides users every step of the way through a mobile application developed by Ethos Solutions.

Think of it as your grill buddy. The application provides real-time interconnectivity between the grill and the user through smartphones or tablets via Wi-Fi. On either device, you can select a recipe from an extensive online menu created by the company’s professional chef and then send the recipe information to the grill. Once the grill has reached the predetermined target temperature, the application will prompt you when to place the food on the grill, flip it, and remove it. Along the way, you get temperature readings for each active burner and countdowns to the next step. Better yet, you can simultaneously cook multiple recipes and store your cooking sessions for repeat performances.

Essential to the tight, millisecond synchronicity between the grill and application is its Heroku backend. It serves as the relay station between the grill and mobile device, enabling not only fast out-of-the box grill setup and user authentication but also facilitating step-by-step recipe commands to the grill and corresponding push notifications to the user. In addition, Heroku captures performance data for customer support diagnostics.

In hindsight, Lynx’s decision to go with Heroku has turned out to be the winning ingredient. During the early stages of the SmartGrill development effort, Lynx product developers noticed unacceptable latency issues with Microsoft Azure, at that time the system backend. After the switch to Heroku, they saw a significant performance increase and have never looked back—because Heroku proved to be the best fit for the application to ensure the wow effect Lynx was shooting for.

No doubt, after having already won an innovation award at the 2014 CES for its concept version, the SmartGrill has become a topic of social conversation. And social it is in more than one sense. Built into the application is a community feature that allows grill enthusiasts to post their own recipes or try—and rate—those of other community members.

All of which opens up the window for unimagined competitions: tasty cook-offs between friends and fellow grill aficionados. The internet of things and smart interconnectivity have truly arrived.
